Native Tree Success Story
Fraser firs grown in North Carolina now comprise more than 15 percent of live Christmas trees sold nationwide. Tremendously popular in our region, every one of the million Fraser firs that will be harvested this year are descendants of native trees found growing in the Southern Appalachians. Although some wild stands are now threatened by air pollution and pests, the cultivated version is going strong.

Maybe you knew that poinsettias were called "crown of the Andes," but how about "lobster flower?" The University of Illinois Extension's Poinsettia Pages are full of these tidbits, along with great information on choosing beautiful plants and keeping them looking good. There are even links to ideas for using the plants in school projects. Check it out before National Poinsettia Day, December 12.
